Paravan cameras for sub sea reconnaissance

Paravan camera systems is a new way to map and make under water imaging and photos. This unique system is towed under the boat with a wire up to surface. The balanced wings makes it pressed straight down and keeping it horizontal. Speed range is zero to 2-3 knots with very good stability and balance. Cameras and illuminations systems makes continuos videos of the sea bottom. DGPS and navigation systems makes the position known and the result is a globally positioned video of what is down there.

Photo shows our first system during tests at sea outside Waxholm in Stockholm archipelago.

Paravan cameras is a new way for fast and cheap under water photography and imaging. The paravan principe is old and here we use it to control a camera towed after a boat. This makes it possible to control depth and distance over bottom with a simple wire hoist and the camera nicely follows the boat. Arrangement of balanced wings and rudders makes the paravan sub sea camera moving steadily and smoothly under the boat. In some ways it is like airborne photography but under the water and with a boat instead of an aircraft. This makes it easy to search over very large areas in short time with no diver . These cameras are made to fit customer needs and we can offer several models equipped with various sensors.

From 2006 we can deliver the paravan cameras with the unique active pixel CCD cameras for operation in ambient light of 10 micro lux. This admits passive viewing with no lamps to far larger depth than other cameras. The turbid water applications is then far easier.

2007 we started up a new development for a small paravan camera designed for environmental works. This is a modular concept and it can carry all from cameras and lasers to environmental sensors. This is about 35 kg in weight and aimed to be used from smaller boats and inflatable.

Applications for Paravan camera systems for sub sea imaging and photography
  • Mapping of bottom in 3D from a boat
  • Searching of lost equipment
  • Maintenance of off shore installations
  • Making mosaic photos of large areas of sea bottom / map production / GIS data collection
  • Documentation of installations under the water.
  • Mine sweeping and looking for ammunition and lost torpedoes
