Bedarö incident summer 1998

The site for electro optical sensors and lasers. gy Gyroview stabilized binocular which gave a important assistance and saved a boat and avoided problems for the crew.

Without this system this should have ended in a bad situation with loss of the boat . The crew should have been forced to swim to the close-by cliffs and wait for help here.

The clear image of the Gyroview did make it possible for people at a close by island to see something was wrong and to act as a life saver. The first looks at a standard binocular of 7x40 gave no indication that something was wrong. The clear Gyro view image said it was really wrong and a fast acting was needed.

Picture of Gyroview 2 the situation saver.

Staffan Nyblom was standing in his summerhouse at Bedarö looking at the stormy weather through his windows. Bedarö can be translated to " prayers island." This area is crowded with small islands and rocks in the water and is known to need a lot of care for navigation. Staffan was looking to the bad weather is his warm summerhouse. The vawes were rough and unpleasant.

Suddenly he noticed a sailing boat at a strange position where few sails prefer to be. The boat was far away and he could barely see it. The boat was out close to some rocks outside a small island which was a strange position. He picked up his standard binocular with 7x40 in optics and looked to the boat. The magnification gave no details but indicated something was strange. The always present problems to keep the binocular steadily made it more difficult to see what was going on out on the sea.

Staffan went down stairs and picked up the Gyroview he had borrowed for some tests and turned it on. The 14 X magnification can get the resolution needed to see details and the gyro stabilized platform kept the image crystal clear.

The view was clear and obvious. There was an emergency situation needing immediate action.

The sailing boat was sitting on some underwater rocks and jumping up and down with the sea. The mast was swinging in all directions and the staff was running around .This situation could not last for a long time before the sailing boat should sink.

Staffan called for his daughter Ragnhild and they went down to their boat in a small well protected bay between the cliffs. The 21 feet Bayliner did have a hard job to get close by the sailing boat as it was far inside and between a lot of submerged rocks where the vawes collapsed. About 10 meter from the sailing boat they shouted to the staff if they needed some help. The two very pale faces of the crew looked desperate and smiled a lot.

After a while they god a rope between toe boats and with small margins they towed the sailing boat between the rocks and cliffs and out on the sea. The sailing boat was brought to a harbor.

In the harbor they talked with the crew and they told their story. The engine died suddenly and they could not restart it. When they used the anchor it did not grab the rocky bottom and they drifted inside the rocks and hit an underwater rock. The boat was slowly being destroyed and they should not have been afloat 1 hour more if Staffan and his daughter did not act rapidly.

After the rescue Staffan said that if he did not have the gyro stabilized image he should not realize the dangerous situation and probably not do so much expect thinking about stupid and brave sailors. The old binocular did not grab the situation and the danger in it.

Now Staffan want to have a Gyroview when he on the sea.

This is a real situation and no fake. It happened summer 1998 south east of Stockholm in the outer islands.

Left image shows a typical view of a stabilized system like Gyroview

Right image shows a fake of a typical image through a standard binocular with blur from keeping it steadily. These image have the same magnification. Practically the Gyroview with its 14X magnifications shows far more details giving a larger difference than these images indicate.
