Technical specification of LaserGrab
LaserGrab is a laser radar based system for obstacle detection in rail road crossings or any other similar areas.
The laser radar sense the 3D shape of the scanned area and remember what the crossings looks like when empty.
Obstacles gives a different 3D shape and the difference is measured by the laser radar.
The laser is a distance meter measuring the distance to the closest surface over the scanned area. This is normally far behind the crossing. Obstacle must be in a defined distance segment of the scan. All things giving reflexes here must be an obstacle and by some smart algorithms the obstacle is found in a very reliable way.
Laser radar works in all kinds of ambient light and can see anything giving a reflex. The angles / distances in combination of the scan makes it possible to see area of obstacle and this can be handled in size dependant filters.
Pedestrians can be avoided by larger objects shall give an alarm. This is easy to set for each type of crossing.
Fail safe design makes the system reliable .

  • Laser radar scanner with mirror scanning technology
  • Angles of scan can be set from 0 to 60 degree by mechanical adjustment
  • Distance range from 1 meter to 100 meter to dark gray targets in sun or rainy weather
  • Pulsed laser distance meter / time of flight system
  • Distance accuracy of the laser distance meter +- 20 cm measured at +- 1 Sigma definition
  • Pulse frequency of distance meter1000 Hz or 5000 Hz / meassurements per sec.
  • Laser wavelength 905 nm in near IR area of optical spectra
  • Laser safety class Class 1 at 1000 Hz and Class 3B at 5000 Hz
  • Laser beam diameter at exit 23 mm and at 25 meter distance about 100 mm
  • Minimum target size at 20 meter distance and 1 sec resonce time less 100 mm in width
  • Dimensions 450x300x200 mm in steel cabinet with 2 mm steel design
  • Encapsulation IP 54 or better
  • Operation temperature - 40 to + 50 degree measured at outdoor air temperature and at a sun power of 1000 W per square meter heating up the system . ( more realistic than 70 degree in a temperature chamber with no sun.
  • Optional peltier cooler handles over 70 degree in thermal chamber.
  • System is adapted and designed to demanmds in Sweden, Italy and Spain for national rail road applications.

  • Fail safe alarm output handling an approved rail road signal relay of fail proof style
  • RS 232 for service computer / settings
  • Optional vandal alarm system
  • Optional extra alarm output for mal functions in the system
  • Optional over heated operation
  • All signals follow general rail road international standards
