LaserGrab PLS 180 obstacle scanner
The scanner is in the blue box at left corner. The laser radar is scanned just over the rail top over 180 degree in angle. Distance and angle is measured . In an empty situation the system is calibrated so the laser radar data are stored in the fail safe PLC system. When there is an obstacle or person in the area there is always something closer in range than the stored readings. By the distance and angle the size can be calculated. Time can filter away things flying in the air and left is static or slower moving obstacles like persons or larger obstacles. This activated an alarm output based on fail safe technology. PLS 180 laser radar system fulfills rail road safety demands in most countries and related EN norms. The system is fail safet to class 4 level of rail road safety classification

LaserGrab Platform Ladar PLS 180 is an obstacle detection system designed to see people walking or laying in rail track areas near stations or anywhere else. The unique characteristics only possible to get by a laser radar design makes it possible to pin point out the small surface of a person laying between the rails at long distance. PLS 180 is a similar design to the other LaserGrab system made form obstacle detection in rail road crossings and the PLS 60 system with smaller scanned area. PLS 180 can see pedestrians as well as other obstacles threwed down on the rail by hooligans. This technology is the only available system based on optics which is fail safe according to rail road regulations and demands. Radar and inductive systems have not been able to fully meet the hard requirements by rail road authorities. They can never be fail safe.
