The small box is the laser radar unit. It scans with the laser beam over the crossing and measures the distances over the area. In a memory there is a 2D map over the crossing and this is compared with what is measured. If there are deviations they are noticed by the change in shape of the scanned area. If the shape have a specific shape corresponding to what is decided as an obstacle the detection let the safety relay fall.

Bottom view

Same but from side. The beam is spread out / defocused to be sure all sorts of obstacles are hit. The resolution of the system in the scanned area is less 5 cm.
