3 D shape and dimension analyze by laser radar technology
Automatic tracking and targeting of specific shapes 3D laser radar scan over a trailer with a SCUD missile in upright position. Here the idea is to scan large areas and look for special shapes which are characteristic for this type of target. The real 3D measurements can see much more than a 2D camera and none have got successful in hiding its own volume on a portable system. Laser radar can see through a lot of vegetation so this is no guarantee to be hidden.

Here the algorithm was looking for a specific shape of a cylinder with a known size which could be horizontal or vertical depending on the up or down position of the missile. Areas can be stored in 3D and after some time measured again and then the difference in shape can be detected.

This do also work well in non military applications. For SAR / search and rescue applications laser radar systems can sense over large areas and target the shapes and characteristics of objects like life wets in the water, small boats, oil etc.

3 D views independent of colors and ambient illumination This very nice scan over an industrial robot are done by research staff in Linköping and Luleå Universities. The scanner was using a pulsed distance meter with several hundred meters in range but still it could see the small details of the robot. This system was an automatic operating robot using the laser scanner for navigation. Laser radar systems can give sub cm accuracy at short ranges and sub 10 cm at 1000 meter in distance. They can measure at speeds of over 5000 distances per sec at long ranges. Distance as color displays are efficient and simple to operate.
This distance image gives a lot of information compared to what a 2 D color image can offer. This view for an operator in a navigation or tracking applications offers far better feelings than what any 2D camera can do. The ambient light can be total darkness and colors and contrasts does not matter at all.
See through particles capability
Laser radar systems can see through vegetation , foliage and masking nets to some degree. This is very important and unique. Tests with earlier generation masking nets with no chlorophyll correction shows that they are very easy to see when eye can not see anything at all of interest. The laser radars systems are superior to most optical alternatives and together with laser cameras and thermal viewers they are the practical alternatives.

In this cane there are no targets inside the bushes but we could easily have detected a person standing there. We can also see small objects like wire activated mines inside here and use this system for mine sweeping.

The LIDAR technology admits new ways to think going into the future

Airborne laser scanning of the dam in Noppikoski in Sweden done by a Geeomapper system. This airborne or car operated systems make 3D models of surrounding areas from a moving platform. It can paint the shape of what is closer than 1000 meter into a 3D model in a computer and overlay it with an image mosaic .
