This is the camera and distance meter part sitting under the helicopter. Here it is mounted on a Paravion mount under a Hughes 500 helicopter. For other helicopters this will looks different. We have two high quality video cameras and a laser altimeter for measuring the topographical profile of the power line.

This is the larger version of the system with all inside and some extra options. We have a very good DGPS solution with about 50-100 cm in accuracy. There is a PC Pentium processor onboard. There are two digital camera recording systems for the two cameras. This system operates on its own battery as the helicopter batteries are some small and needs care.

The operators panel is available in several versions. The system on the photo is the older version with a PC screen and a camera screen side by side. There is a key board.

The last version have no keyboard and only a larger PC / Camera screen in one unit. The idea is than there shall be no typing in the air. Inspector shall look and decide what he see and not play a secretary while flying.

If there is a need to measure in the image in any way we prefer to have a laser altimeter . This gives distance to the ground and by this the scale factor of the cameras. Then you can measure in image if the ground is flat enough. If not you need a laser scanner to give the complete terrain profile.
