| Pirates and terrorists has become a large problems in attacking ships and off shore installations. In some areas this is a real threat even to larger ships. Areas where problems are large is places like Malacka straights where numerous larger ships are attacked . Outside the African border ships are robbed when they are anchored at sea and in some Caribbean areas the narcotic dealers attack smaller vessels and kill the crew to get ships for the drug business. Terror is a common weapon for some groups and there have been attacks to ships with bombs as well as suicide attacks with rubber boats. This has given a demand for better control systems and warnings for coming attacks or any objects acting in strange ways. The earlier attacks in Oman harbor and the threat to the new Queen Elizabeth 2 shows this is an area demanding for better warning systems. Fears fro attacks to off shore oil installations are a real problem today. The small boats are difficult to see at radar and this needs a high degree of attention from crew to observe what is coming. This is impractical and often missed with painful results. Automatic detection and warning systems helps a lot to stop and reduce these problems. Radar has proven to not do the job.
